GBMNews is an innovative news site specifically for the LGBT community of color. We maintain a local as well as global perspective. In addition to news, our site has a significant emphasis on music, theatre, film, literature, dance and the visual arts. Their audience is rapidly growing. At this time it is believed that they have the largest Internet audience of any site for the LGBT community of color. The site is an outgrowth of our successful Yahoo group, where we post news articles of general interest to our community.
As of July 2009, GBMNews debuted a newly designed site featuring colorful magazines on entertainment, fashion, theatre and travel. The new website, while it continues the successful approach of the news group, is of a totally different nature. GBMNews is designed around the successful Web 2.0 philosophy of a user generated content site. In other words, community writers are recruited and encouraged to contribute articles on events and issues happening in the community Similar to Wikipedia, YouTube and Google Blogger, community volunteer writers are encouraged to contribute articles on news, issues and events.
While GBMNews will continue to feature articles from the general news media, their future lies in articles written by their team of citizen-journalists. In time, the site will be largely driven by contributor content. In essence, GBMNews is becoming a news site “of the people, by the people, and for the people”.
So far, so good… new writers are joining the site at a fast pace, and they expect to recruit many more writers (both professional and amateur) over the next few years. These writers will report the news and tell the stories that the mainstream press often overlooks.
GBMNews aspires to professional quality in our stories. Many of our contributors include both amateur and professional writers who are book authors, play-wrights, poets and/or freelance journalists as well as; photographers, videographers, poets, musicians and visual artists. The site is committed to posting quality and informative articles. In addition to news, interviews and commentary, our site features creative writing, art and intellectual discussions. The over arching goal is to embrace the community and provide an environment where individuals can feel free to express themselves.
They’ve started a series of book and art reviews, and are publishing book excerpts and serializations. They have advice and self-help columns and have opened an Art Gallery where artists can display images of their work and receive comments from our readers RadioGBM is now available in it's beta form. This Internet radio station is global and features multiple music channels where you will find LBGT musicians work juxtaposed with tracks from the greater music world.
Along with their focus on community writers, GBMNews has a global perspective. They currently feature writers from around the world, Cameroon to California. Their objective is to cover the world of gay people of color, throughout the African Diaspora, Hispanic and Asian communities.
